Photographers on a Plane
How many full frame DSLR cameras can you load onto an airliner before it just can't take off and fly?
Seeing the World of Beauty
I'd rather immerse myself in what makes the world lovely instead of what makes me sad. Any day of the year is a good day for this.
Blurb Restores Photography to Reality
Blurb has been a wonderful development for me because now I can see more of my photographic expression converted to the printed media for which cameras were originally intended. The digital age has made photography more relevant and more accessible, but Blurb and other sites like it have returned digital photography to the essence of the art - sharing a printed image.
Do You Care About AI
The fundamental differences between machine learning and human artistic expression is not something you can teach. It's something you have to experience. That's always going to be the bridge that AI cannot cross.
Mind The Gap
The gap that exists between the image you take and image you want to take.
Soft Light Please
Watching the last gasps of light reach across mountain tops inspired me to appreciate the serenity and charm of soft light. Gently gently, even under heavy clouds and grey skies there is joy in that light which lacks contrast.
No Bystanders
It can be very very difficult to connect with people, to crack open a gap and peer inside the lives of others. It demands patience and honesty. There is no camera upgrade or new technology to make it easier.
Presentation is Everything
Taking great photos is never enough, it’s how you present them that matters. The internet creates an entirely new challenge for presenting photographic work, but also entirely new opportunities.
Behind the Feathers
I started trying to write a thankyou list for all the people who helped make the "Feathers of the Dragon" exhibition possible, and was quickly overwhelmed by how connected the world really is. Both the world of galleries with their images on the wall, and the world of wild spaces where birds exist in harmony with the Himalayan mountains. Apologies in advance that it took 1800 words to say my THANKS.
Self Success
Most of us fear success. We are terrified of how it might change or lives and or responsibilities. But how much success do we really need to achieve happiness in our careers?
Hard Lessons with Hard Drives
This is the 2020 update to my popular article on why and how to make sure your backups are sorted. Cloud storage is not always the answer when big RAW files and big photo collections are at stake. I spend more on hard drives than cameras, so read on to find out why.
Anything But Now
The problem with living the life of a photographer is that you so rarely get a chance to live in the now. Everything is past or present and very little in between.
